Since the start of the new year, there have been updates in telehealth billing requirements. The providers affected are those who provide telehealth services to patients. This change will impact most insurances and you should contact your provider line to confirm. The revisions affect existing POS code 02 and new POS code 10, and they are described as follows in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services bulletin:
POS 02: Telehealth Provided Other Than in Patient’s Home
The location where health services and health related services are provided or received, through telecommunication technology. Patient is not located in their home when receiving health services or health related services through telecommunication technology.
POS 10: Telehealth Provided in Patient’s Home
The location where health services and health related services are provided or received through telecommunication technology. Patient is located in their home (which is a location other than a hospital or other facility where the patient receives care in a private residence) when receiving health services or health related services through telecommunication technology.
Billing experts of physicians, providers, and suppliers that are billing MAC for telehealth services should be aware of these changes and when they are applicable. While the new modifications have become effective since January 1, 2022, they will not be implemented until April 4, 2022 when the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) ends (unless legislation extends it). In the meantime, billers can continue to use the POS they would have used if the service had been in person. After the PHE ends, billers will need to keep these new modifications in mind and apply them to telehealth services for Medicare patients.
